WEATHERLY — In Round 3 of this year’s boys’ basketball rivalry between Marian and Mahanoy Area, Marian raced out to an early lead.
Like the other two times the teams matched up, the rest of the game came down to defense.
The top-seeded Colts blew open a five-point game with a second- quarter run, then held off a few late charges from the Golden Bears to earn a 36-24 win in a District 11 Class A quarterfinal at Weatherly High School.
With the victory, Marian moves on to face fourth-seeded Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg, which defeated Weatherly 67-55, on Tuesday at a site to be determined.
Mahanoy Area posted the first points of the day roughly 40 seconds into the contest on a pair of free throws from Francis Senglar, but the Bears were without another score until 3 1/2 min-
utes later. By then, Cody Decker rained home a 3-pointer, Matt Yaich connected on a pair of pull-up jumpers and Chris Barletta knifed into the lane for a basket to put the Colts up 9-2.
Mahanoy Area head coach Mickey Holland divulged his game plan, which involved a high number of passes per possession to keep Marian on the defensive and open up good perimeter shots for the guard- oriented squad.
“We shot poorly,” Holland mused afterward, “because our shot selection wasn’t good. Our plan was to get a lot more ball movement than we did.”
The Bears did find the basket late in the first when substitutes Mike Gaval and Neal Goodman connected on triples, but Barletta countered with a floater at the end of the quarter to give Marian a 15-10 lead.
In the second quarter, Marian’s offense continued to roll thanks to dribble penetration from Barletta and Decker and fast-break finishes from Yaich. Mahanoy, however, went cold and was held just to two points (a Senglar layup) in the period.
“Against their zone, we didn’t attack the middle like we usually do,” Holland said. “We ended up throwing up perimter shots, and with their size advantage a miss is as bad as a turnover cause they could get out and run.”
At the half, the Colts led 26-12.
“The fact that they had 26 at half was a bad omen,” Holland added. “For us to have a chance, we needed it to be a low-scoring game. In the first (half), we pretty much played their game.”
Added Marian head coach Mick Stefanek: “That good second quarter provided us some separation. We were able to maintain that in the second half and come out with the ‘W.’ “
With the two teams being familiar with each other, second-half adjustments led to a defensive struggle with Mahanoy Area playing catch-up.
The Bears were never within 10 in the second half; the closest Mahanoy Area got in the fourth was 13.
Marian held two of Mahanoy’s leading scorers, Eric Moucheron (3) and Jimmy Wagner (2), to a combined five points — including Moucheron’s 3-pointer just before the game ended. Stefanek tipped his proverbial hat to his players for their defensive intensity.

In some cases, entire companies don’t care to employ anyone unless they had some qualification that they couldnt have gotten when they were still young. This I consider to be interesting, but rather than cave, Id be challenged to seek adult education by it. There is no such thing as an ideal candidate for a job, really. It is all about you understanding what the employer is looking for, and positioning yourself such that you qualify for it. I am telling you, you can come as close to that ideal as possible with just a little bit of adult education. You may want to look into what your chances will be like. If the minimum educational requirements for a job are things you don’t have, you could give it up and go home. Better still, you could go back to school, get some adult education, and come back with those qualifications and cease the job. Whats it going to be? Adult education has been around for a while, and it continues to grow. It is put I place to help people who think time has passed them by but who are still willing to have a go at it. What about you? Are you willing to have a go? A lot of professional certifications you could seek in the United States today can only be gotten by adult education. Afterall, its not like they are expecting minors to come seek these jobs or anything. So why don’t you take up the opportunity and use it?
